There has emerged on the Web a trend towards socializing things which are not inherently social such as books, photos, videos, and text such as news articles, papers, and posts. This inclination extends to Web applications such as collaborative project management programs including as Basecamp, document sharing applications such as Google-Docs & Spreadsheets , and many others. I’ve learned SO much photoshop and design tips mostly from this site and have a feeling I could now design an entire site in a .PSD file. However, I have no idea how to convert it to an actual site! A simple definition is an image or photo that is striking, shocking, intriguing, interesting, beautiful or sexy (we’ll be looking at plenty of examples below). It causes a reaction from the senses of visitors that an average image would not.
You’ve got friends, comments, picture galleries, favorites, videos - basically, it has all the features of MySpace. In this department, Care2 is way ahead of the pack. Look at the YouTube design - right there on the right are links to other related videos and the top level navigation is light weight and focused around aggregations or list views. The technology enables the broadcast of TV-quality video over the Internet, and allows people to stream real TV programs from networks like MTV and National Geographic. It also features search, chat and instant messaging, built right into the interface.
Optionally, you can create a category called “Featured” and it will show on the top of the home page with added designs. We just launched realmapz.com, which currently has only properties on California’s central coast, but has some features that we have not seen on other sites. The filters are applied with javascript without a round-trip to the server, and there is a sorting algorithm that changes the color of the marker icons based on the sorting criteria, again without leaving the context of the current page. It can be as simple as “copy and pasting” a PHP error/warning directly into the search to utilizing the more advanced search features of Google. I would attribute a significant part of my ability to figure out solutions to issues simply by effective Google searching.
