Web 2.0 Conference

Users are remixing each other’s work as well as top down content in the grey area of ‘fair use.’ And users are shooting everything with small mobile devices. User generated content has been getting more famous (hence since like digg getting more popular) than sites like new york times or wall street journal. One of the biggest consumers of these technical applications were companies in the financial and in the banking sectors.

Wikipedia may be the most famous. Experts have given Wikipedia middling reviews, but they miss the critical point: it’s good enough. Wikipedia, a community-authored encyclopedia, is an example. It might also be by ”tagging” content, attaching words to describe an audio podcast, so that, for instance, someone might be able to quickly view every podcast that dealt with cars.

Mashups combine other people’s work into a new . Take clips from videos published on Ourmedia , add music from wherever, and you have a mashup. Mashups: Google has been a leader in this trend of remixing the Web. The company has taken its most popular services and made freely available the basic technology behind them — application-program interfaces, or APIs.

Google’s service is not a server–though it is delivered by a massive collection of internet servers–nor a browser–though it is experienced by the user within the browser. Nor does its flagship search service even host the content that it enables users to find. Google already has translation features built into its engine (from a third party), but this hand-rolled stuff was far more powerful, it seemed to me. Google’s after hours party was the place to be, as liquor flowed freely. Highlight of the party, colored and glowing cubes in Google colors in your drinks.

AJAX, a set of development techniques standardized over the past eight years, could change all that by bringing more sophisticated interfaces to Web applications. This week, closely watched Zimbra plans to outline its business model and to announce that it has secured $16 million in venture funding at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco. AJAX is a big part of Web 2.0. It’s basically a way to make Web pages look and act as if they are running on your PC instead of coming in over the Internet.

Tim O’Reilly and the company he founded are generally considered to be Good Guys™, and the move was disillusioning to the faithful. It didn’t take long for O’Reilly and CMP to reconsider their position, though; a letter arrived the next day which granted IT@Cork a reprieve. Tim O’Reilly’s own definition includes a three-color diagram with 20-odd boxes and lines. The easiest definition, however, is simply the group of new Web sites that have grown after the dot-com crash at the turn of the millennium. Tim O’Reilly provided examples of companies or products that embody these principles in his description of his four levels in the hierarchy of Web 2.0-ness. Level 3 applications, the most “Web 2.0″-oriented, which could only exist on the Internet, deriving their power from the human connections and network effects that Web 2.0 makes possible, and growing in effectiveness the more people use them.

Web 2.0 Technologies

Web 2.0 technologies such as collective intelligence, wikis, and social networking provide the means to collaborate. More than that, they are easily accessible and downloadable (or rentable) from the web to the desktop without some corporate standard having to be invoked. Web 2.0 technologies are hitting the mainstream both in consumer and business contexts. Firms using Web 2.0 technologies are driven by gains in worker efficiency and a fear of competitive pressures. Web 2.0 technologies is being used extensively by knowledge management solution vendors like Kanisa (bought over long time market leaders in Service Resolution Management space i.e. With companies like Ontoprise and Cerebra raising huge VC funding and projecting web 2.0 as enabling EAI platform it sure has gret potential.

Web 2.0 technologies have become an important part of many Web sites but few library Web sites have seamlessly integrated them. Coombs describes the building of a new Web site at the UH libraries that incorporates Web 2.0 technologies.

Blogs can easily attract online communities and foster active discussions for a book club or even function as a virtual “suggestion box.”.I’m sure these technologies can also operate in conjunction with each other. Blogs require a lot of time. Social networks collapse if there’s no member interaction. Blogs may indeed be an even greater milestone in the history of publishing than web-pages. They enable the rapid production and consumption of Web-based publications.

Blogs and wikis are collaboration tools, and as such, they are useful mainly for sharing unstructured information associated with ad hoc or ongoing projects and processes, but not for structured informational retrieval. However, Shell is converting its official documentation to wiki’s, because this enables the company to make documentation updates available in real time. Blogs make great communication tools internally and wikis are great ways to collectively own and edit company procedures and knowledge bases.

RSS inside the enterprise will increase information awareness, and can be a basis for research and discovery the way FriendFeed is on the consumer web. RSS, the shorthand for the Really Simple Syndication services that let people subscribe to online distribution of news and information, and podcasts each had just 35% of executives reporting investments. And wikis, the publishing systems that allow many authors to contribute, captured the investments of just 33% of executives.

Interest in Enterprise Web 2.0 has until now been focused primarily on blogs and wikis. These tools enhance the collaborative experience of knowledge workers and consumers by fostering improved sharing of unstructured data such as procedures, instructions and e-mail text. Interesting how the PHP logic and Rails logice are about the same. Although with the PHP script it stores the geocodes in a database for future reference. Interestingly, I mainly use them in my leisure time. I blog, I mess about on MySpace, I watch things on YouTube, I look things up on Wikipedia, I tag things (mainly blog-related), I use instant messaging,?and I’ve just recently made my first use of an RSS feed on this blog.

Web 2.0 Smes

It is therefore essential to overcome this resistance and promote an understanding of the real and practical benefits of Web 2.0 so that it is embraced within business to reflect positively on organisational culture, ROI and business value. Learning is made available within the context of work and, thus, needs to be in a form that is easily retrieved. For that reason, learning is not always accessed via the LMS, but pushed to the learner through email or accessed via links on an organization’s intranet. I was looking at how recruitment can be improved within SME’s.

Selfserve is about driving traffic to a Myspace profile - usage stays within the community and is not taken off site. This is quite a revolutionary change from traditional net marketing that is all about driving traffic to a web site. Without a good project manager IT departments can often feel that they are lacking the focus required to get the job done, with the right skills allocated to it, on time and within budget. The result is that some serious tail chasing occurs. One of the activities within the project is the organization of workshops and seminars in all partner countries with representants of SMEs, eLearning developers and providers, trainers, eLearning experts, regional authorities and researchers. The first meetings were used to discuss different eLearning based training strategies and for searching ways to convince SMEs about the advantages of eLearning.

This is the kind of goal setting the internet generation understands! It will support the web 2.0 type of open innovation, living labs etc. Any version of Netscape or Internet Explorer older than 3.0 must be upgraded. However, these staged models have been discredited in the literature and are now accepted as being flawed and inadequate to describe the actual adoption of Internet technologies by SMEs. A framework distinguishing three dimensions of change (process, content, and drivers) has been developed to study and classify this evolution.

The company introduced the first version of its flagship software product, the e-smith server and gateway, in April 1999. By the end of the year, many thousands of e-smith servers were running in countries from Fiji to Finland. IBM’s Express portfolio comprises hardware, software, services, solutions and financing and is designed to meet specific criteria for SMBs. Mid-market businesses will also have the opportunity to benefit from IBM’s Express Advantage initiative which includes the “Express Portfolio” and provides mid-market businesses access to a network of local IBM Business Partners and customer experience capabilities. The latest software version, of the SME Toolkit, Web 2.0, includes live chat, online forums, and interactive business directories that create a global community where smaller businesses can interact and collaborate.

Interviews and practical advice for startups and businesses of all sizes. Real inspiration, real insight and the secrets of success from real entrepreneurs. If you are a small business, you can provide the same sophisticated customer services as the big guys.

Build A Website Books

Web 2.0 is a participatory client server environment of social networking, bookmarking, media-sharing sites, blogs, wikis, P2P networking, AJAX-generated applications and RSS feeds – A world largely outside of the IT department’s control. Both of these sites are good bookmarking tools, and both of them make it ridiculously easy to add new sites. If you use the Yahoo Toolbar, you can add sites to your My Web page with just the click of a button. Is there any articles, books, software on that or is it just something you do instinctively.

Now, it’s a crass buzzword used to sell books and conference passes to the unsuspecting business person as the next savior of their product or business. Everyone’s claiming to be “web 2.0″ but very few have embraced the original principles, or even remember that they exist. Blogger and social bookmarking junkie Muhammad Saleem says it?s more a case of mob rule than wisdom: ?People stop making decisions based on their own opinion. While the system assumes that all the Diggers are making decisions based on what they think, they are in fact making decisions based on what other users think. When I typed this into Google, I was flooded with results promoting my own ebook!!

The other type of social bookmarking site is one where people need to vote on your specific story that you submit. The description will have a short description of the content on your website and a link as well. Web 2.0 sites, such as Facebook and YouTube, are anti-governmental by their nature. Their appeal is their spontaneity and unofficial nature. Create content that is very informative, unique or witty, so that others will want to link to you freely and share your content in social bookmarking or social community websites. In Digg, for example, countdown types of articles (top 30 list, top 10 tips, etc) works very well.

Even more importantly, they harnessed their users to annotate the data, such that after ten years, Amazon, not Bowker, is the primary source for bibliographic data on books, a reference source for scholars and librarians as well as consumers. Amazon also introduced their own proprietary identifier, the ASIN , which corresponds to the ISBN where one is present, and creates an equivalent namespace for products without one. It?s not enough that users know that they can go to del.icio.us to bookmark an article or blog post, readers are expecting a link right there at the base of the entry. It shouldn?t be necessary for users to click through to view the comments following an article. Isn’t Facebook just a bigger aggregator of page views?

Whilst being a strong advocate of social bookmarking sites, article sites (ezine articles being the main one, as mentioned above), etc, I have never been quite able to get into this Squidoo lark! Although I have a couple of lenses which were set up some months ago, I find that SEO and article writing takes up all my time. Games can be played on the site, or can be added as Facebook applications. Social Bookmarking is helpful to drive more traffic for a site that may convert into potential sales. It is the popular way to store and share links through the internet.

Web 2.0 And Online Education

One would assume that I would have learned a thing or two from all the early birds who finished this assignment days ago, but . Another uses it as a venue for advertising events and then gives students an assignment asking them to analyze the site. Instead, Boaz logs onto Amarillo College\47s Web site to submit assignments, e-mail any questions to her instructor and take exams. Called WiMax, it\46#39;s the heart of a huge telecommunications industry effort to supplant Wi-Fi, the service that most users rely on for wireless Internet connections at broadband speeds.

In 1992, Rosalie Wells described gating as a pacing technique that denies students access to information before they have completed all prerequisite assignments. It signals that students must complete a task to get access to a cooperative resource. A good question was about plagiarism - what can a mother do to help her son who is cutting and pasting information for an assignment, and playing with fonts, keywords and more to ‘hide’ this capture. My response is always the same - pick your opportunity! Each profile item, blog post, or uploaded file can be assigned its own access restrictions - from fully public, to only readable by a particular group or individual.

Assignments 3 and 4 were concerned with the Elluminate sessions that I ran for midwives last year. Assignment 2 discussed my experience of wikis. High school students, who typically have email accounts of their own, can sign up for a feeds from teachers, allowing teachers to easily send homework assignments and classroom reminders. Teachers, students and parents have a central point to access grading, assignments and messaging. Chalksite is a total web package designed just for teachers, giving you a personal website and tools you actually need without requiring an IT degree to use them.

Web 2.0 tools including blogs, wikis, podcasts, and folksonomies provide opportunities for knowledge building and collaboration for higher education in the 21st century. This presentation will explore the potential of these tools in the context of online learning in higher education. I would have liked to give people a bit more hands-on experience with posting and tagging blog entries, but my timing was thrown off a bit by the movies that were shown. Good stuff, but I need to account for it in the planning. He added environmentally-conscious bloggers were contacted to help with promotion, and possibly blog about it afterwards.

The new web publishes news automatically through RSS feeds or better yet your commentary on issues you care about through corporate blogs. In the old web no one remembered to come back to your site. We believe that some in the edublogosphere will be interested and hope you will contribute your wisdom!

build your own asp.net 2.0 web site using c & vb

Ofcourse some might have seen the pitfall in this method and weaved their own custom page that dynamically adds both the header and footer to their pages automagically. Hence, all the files found directly in the “App_Code” folder must be in the same programming language. The truth is, you can develop a web project solution using both languages if you really need to. The first is that if you want to use the Web.Config file to set the Master Pages, then you should not include the MasterPageFile attribute in the content pages. This is because setting a Master Page within a content page takes precedence over any Master Page set in the configuration file. But I hope you have got some idea of how to write a function to reset contents on a page.

Web 2.0 Money Making Blogs

In order to create rich local features, somebody has to go into the shop and generate content around menus/catalogs, photos, sales. An easy solution could be standardized store-front offerings across several broad categories (restaurant, boutique, services, etc) with tight integration into content aggregators (google maps, froogle, friendfeed?) or mashups. You can’t beat the DS017+ in terms of the number of features you get for the money, but if you want something simpler and more straightforward (and a bit cheaper), we recommend the D-Link DNS-323 . Now Global Sources, which has long conducted careful evaluations of sellers before accepting them on its site, has added a new feature. It teams with independent third parties that provide credit reports and quality assessments of sellers (on a voluntary basis) that prospective buyers can access on the Web site.

He says the ?Web 2.0? features of e-commerce sites ? those inviting interaction ? can be a two-edged sword. Whilst testimonials, customer reviews and allowing blogs and forums onto a site can be beneficial, site owners have to be prepared to take the good with the bad. A few journals with interactive, Web 2.0 features were launched by large commercial publishers. The number of hybrid OA journals grew, and their overall efficacy as a transitional model seemed more certain. So, ideally, marketers should look for features in a CRM application or Marketing Automation application that has a strong focus on customer retention and relationship marketing.

Domain testing , is the ethically questionable, but legal, act of utilizing this loophole by parking a domain, testing the amount of type-in traffic, then cancelling it before the grace period expires. Most registrars are starting to recognize these loopholes and are quickly cracking down on this unscrupulous practice, but with those registrars that haven’t yet barred the practice, this can be a very good way of minimizing the risk of a purchase. A crucial piece of the Activation process should be landing page testing. Multiple versions of your home page are key to understanding activation, an a single version of a home page is probably not the best one any company could come up with.

But what may prove to be of more value to vendors will be the skills of running a successful software-as-a-service (SaaS) business. For the vendors that do it well, disaggregating expertise about the medium from Web 2.0 content is likely to provide far more value than wikis and blogs ever did. After leaving Persistence Software in 2005, Keene spent a year in France as chairman of Reportive Software, a Paris-based maker of business-intelligence tools, and as an adjunct professor and entrepreneur-in-residence at INSEAD, a leading graduate business school. All this, while reinventing the business of advertising as we know it.

In the new Newspaper Next 2.0 report , we’re trying to help newspaper companies see this vision, so they can use the N2 tools, concepts and processes to create new audiences and serve legions of new businesses. Also, businesses are still asking why they should set up blogs,” Lalwani explains. He also clearly delineates the three types of blog initiatives when it comes to blogging for businesses.
