Online encyclopedia Wikipedia completely relies on users?? participation. Britannica, which also runs an online service, unilaterally delivers information provided by the company, but Wikipedia is written and, crucially, edited by its users.
Wikipedia, run by a non-profit organization in the U.S., is an online open encyclopedia with over 4.9 million entries in 200 languages. Yet it has no professional editor, since it runs an open system where anyone can modify or create entries. Wikis, on the other side, enable new ways of collaboration that is previously only possible with expensive proprietary software. Wikis assist collaboration and develop thinking using social tagging for the storage and retrieval of content as it is being built. Eventually, a Wikipedia-like format should evolve and may become a fixed version that can then be categorised as conventional enterprise knowledge management.
