Refactoring requires the development of new services that are directly accessible by users, that are capable of recombination, and permit the removal of overt mediation for content discovery and delivery. A services oriented architecture enables libraries to evolve into stronger organizations, even as their presence diffuses into the users experience of the network. Shouldn’t we be adding authorative content to del.icio.us? It also benefits your website because it motivates users to interact, thus creating content. Other benefits arise from this.

I would never hire myself to design a professional-looking website, or create a complex database. Yet, during the last year and a half, in library school, I have had the opportunity to experiment with new technology. Sometimes the user will come to a catalog; other times the catalog needs to go to the user - by exposing metadata in the search engines, in RSS feeds, through data export of other types. In fact, the catalog is often hidden: a user will have to click through several screens to reach it. The GData C# client is written by Google, so I was really interested to read their code as their interview process is legendary and I assume everyone is a 17 year old PhD. The code is exceedingly object oriented with more than 165 files over 10 folders (not counting unit tests and project stuff).

When you think of the most successful online business of the book industry, I will bet money that 99% of people will say Amazon. The system works and without having to diagram the Amazon site, it should be noted that it contains all four essential elements listed above in regards to a theory for Library 2.0. In the future, books may never go out of print. It could be all print on demand. At the end of March, we’ll randomly draw a name of someone who participated to win a $15 gift card to Book Warehouse! So remember to include enough identifying information about yourself that you can be found in case you win.

On his weblog Edwin Mijnsbergen asked people to comment on these claims. In short: the comments are great! Since I started writing this blog post, I’ve helped 8 people find the right path to get where they wanted to go using a computer. Web 2.0/Library 2.0, here we go. I have a whole list of library-related blogs (including yours) included in my RSS feed from Google. I can check it from any computer with Internet access, so it is very convenient.
